Living in Attenborough
Attenborough is a small and very desirable village situated approximately 6 miles to the South West of Nottingham. This popular village offers low density diverse housing with many attractive period properties and open spaces making this ideal for family purchasers. with Attenborough Nature Reserve to South and Chilwell to the North the village has not expanded significantly and has retained it’s sense of identity.
There is thought to have been a settlement in Attenborough since the 13th century though the core of the village as we now know it began to develop in the 17th Century. Part of the village sits within a conservation area preserving the character and charm of this wonderful village. At the heart of the village is St Mary’s Church the cricket club and tennis club with the nature reserve beyond.
Things to do in Attenborough
Attenborough nature reserve was formed from redundant gravel pits and was opened in 1966 by sir David Attenborough. It is now a site of special national importance with over 160 bird species and a range of other wildlife attracting around 50,000 visitors a year. Covering around 145 hectares of lakes, wetland and grassland the reserve is an excellent place for leisure activities such as walking cycling and running.
The reserve has parking and a stylish modern visitor centre with a shop and cafe offering picturesque views over the River Trent and beyond. The centre runs walks, talks and workshops providing a great resource to the local community and schools.
There are a number of pubs and places to eat in Attenborough and it’s s surrounding area, these include the “Bird Hide Micro Pub” providing a range of local real ales and other drinks. “The Blue Bell” a traditional pub with a menu of grills and other favourites and the “Cornmill” with an extensive all-day menu and family friendly outdoor play area. For those who fancy a quick coffee and cake Costa is on the doorstep or there is the sandwich stop and MacDonalds for some fast food.
For everyday essentials the premier situated within Attenborough service station offers groceries but for a wider choice there Chilwell retail park a short walk away. The retail park has a range of national retailers such as M&S Food, TK Maxx, Matalan, Next and Halfords, all with ample parking provided.
For the sports enthusiasts Attenborough has an established cricket club who play on the delightful village green with 4 Saturday leagues and 2 Sunday sides. Attenborough Tennis club and Academy provides coaching for all ages and abilities and there are leagues and tournaments for the more competitive. For something a touch more relaxed the village hotel has a pool and spa or why not try out Chilwell Olympia which has Badminton and Squash, a range of fitness classes, Gymnastics and Trampolining. If golf is your chosen sport Chilwell Manor Golf Club offers an excellent 18 hole course situated in former parkland.
Transport in Attenborough
Whilst Attenborough feels tucked away in a peaceful position it still has excellent transport links with a train station on the main London line and regular services to the cities of Derby and Nottingham. For those looking to commute, the A52 link road to Derby and Grantham and Junction 25 of the M1 motorway is just a short drive away. The Nottingham Express Transit tram system is a short walk away with links to Nottingham city centre and other local destinations. Frequent bus services also operate to Nottingham, East Midlands Airport, Derby, Loughborough and other local towns.
