Stapleford – A Guide to the Town

Stapleford Town Guide

Situated in the Erewash Valley within the Borough of Broxtowe, Stapleford town lies to the south West of Nottingham and dates back to Norman times. It’s mentioned in the Domesday book from 1086 with the original spelling of “Stapelford” meaning “a ford marked by posts”. Further evidence of its roots still exists today with a Saxon stone carved cross in the parish church yard of St. Helens, thought to be the oldest Christian memorial in Nottinghamshire.

At the start of the 19th Century Stapleford was a small rural community with a population of less than 800, but by the mid 1800’s Nottingham’s Lace Industry was in full swing and Stock-Makers and Lace weaver’s cottages were built within the town. With their unique design of open plan rooms and large Yorkshire Sash windows, these buildings remain today, many of them are now listed and highly regarded by potential buyers.

The Industrial revolution bought with it the Iron Industry with major Works constructed in nearby Sandiacre and Stanton. People from all over the country came to the area to work, indeed the 1891 Census lists that fewer than half of the Stapleford residents were actually born in the town. Now an established industrial town, Stapleford continued to expand and its convenient location mid-way between Nottingham and Derby increased its population still further.

Today, Stapleford’s Employer demographic is somewhat different to its industrial past but the entrepreneurial spirit of the early pioneers is still evident across the town;  Established local traders such as the ‘Sandicliffe Motor Group’  headquarter it’s offices on  Nottingham Road, listed 13th In Nottinghamshire’s top 200 companies 2019.

‘Bardills’ Garden centre has been trading for more than a century and remains as popular as ever. William Bardill started out as Landscape gardener in 1885 and his family still run the business today, there’s even a local roundabout named after him!

Nottingham’s main ‘Blue Chip’ employers are all within a short commute of the town including Boots the Chemist, Nottingham’s two Universities, the Queens Medical Centre Hospital and Siemens.

Stapleford offers a wide variety of both National and independent retailers and service providers. Supermarkets like Sainsburys local and Lidl have recently been joined by a brand-new Aldi development and are all convenient for the town centre. A larger Tesco superstore is just 10 minutes’ drive away in neighbouring Toton.

Birds the bakers, Iceland foods and the Co-op are other big names in the town along with Greggs, Bargain Booze and any number of local retailers, everything from butchers to grocers and convenience stores. Of course, a town centre is not complete without the essentials and Stapleford is no exception. There are a variety of hairdressers, barbers, Garages/mechanics, home ware and discount stores as well as off licences and newsagents. Charity shops include Treetops, Sue Ryder Cancer care and Nottingham Air Ambulance.

If you fancy a drink or a bite to eat, Stapleford offers a great selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants to suit everyone’s taste and budget. Pubs like Wetherspoons’ “The Sir John Borlasse Warren” on Derby Road and “The Man of Iron” and “The Old Cross” are all popular, particularly at the weekends, and there is a variety of Take-away food shops to choose from. Popular Restaurants include Vivos Italian, Gurkha Curry Nights, Bel Paese and Cinnamon Indian and there’s plenty of coffee bars, snack bars and smaller eateries to enjoy.

The town provides a number of local Health services with Doctors based at the Care Centre on Church Street and the Hickings lane Medical centre. Opticians, Dentists and Pharmacies are also well represented, and the main Queens Medical Centre Hospital is within a short driving distance.

For those with children looking to move to Stapleford there are plenty of State schools for both Primary and Secondary levels; just remember to research catchment areas if there is a particular school you have in mind. At Robert Ellis we would always recommend that you check out the school directory at Find and compare schools in England – GOV.UK or Home | Nottinghamshire County Council to get the best up to date information available for the schools you are interested in.

Below is a list of all the relevant schools in Stapleford:

For leisure time there are a number of public parks and footpaths, some of which link to the Nutbrook Trail,  a ten mile traffic free path that runs between Trent Lock in Sawley, through Long Eaton, Sandiacre, Stapleford and on to Shipley Park, following Erewash Canal.

The Hemlock Stone, a monolith of Red Sandstone formed over 200 Million Years ago, sits proud on a hillside on the outskirts of Stapleford. Situated in a Conservation Area adjacent to Bramcote Park, a large open space for families to explore, dog walking and exercise. If the weather isn’t great Bramcote Leisure Centre offers swimming and fitness for all.

Tucked away in the centre of Stapleford is the attractive Queen Elizabeth II Park with tennis courts multi use play area and crown green bowls, there is something for everyone!

Stapleford is a great place to live if you commute. Being mid-way between Nottingham and Derby,  the town Centre is situated on The Old Derby Road but the nearby A52 dual carriageway now takes the bulk of the traffic.

There is a reliable public transport system with a comprehensive bus service operated by Trent Barton linking Nottingham, Derby, Ilkeston, Beeston and The Queens Medical Centre.

The recently opened ‘Park and Ride’ for the Nottingham Express Tram is located on the outskirts of Stapleford on the border with Toton. There are proposals to extend the tramline to the planned East Midlands HS2 Train Station, whilst a few years away, this will really put the area on the map!

For those wishing to commute further, Junction 25 of the M1 Motorway is less than 3 miles from the town centre and East Midlands Airport is just 10 miles away.

Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, Stapleford has something for everyone;  Victorian Terraced houses, larger period homes, traditional 1930’s semis, modern Four Bedroom family homes and a range of bungalows.

There are a host of new developments planned, with contemporary apartment schemes in the town centre, retirement developments by national builders and new housing developments for comfortable family living.

If you need a solicitor to help you buy and sell your home or for any legal assistance, there are three local firms to choose from: Hawley and Rodgers, Maclaren Warner and Fiona Frankland all within the town centre.

Stapleford really does have something for everyone. Contact our Stapleford branch today if you are looking for a new home in the Stapleford area.

From the moment that one of Robert Ellis agents, Joely, took me under her wing I have felt extremely well looked after. She recommended a lawyer, a su...rveyor and a removal company - all of which have panned out well so far. She has tolerated my almost weekly visits to ask 'stupid' questions and seek reassurance. She and the other 'ladies' in the Long Eaton office have been a source of much needed positivity.

Megan Riley at the Arnold branch valued and marketed our property for sale. We liked her straight away and felt comfortable with her guiding us throu...gh the process. Megan was warm, knowledgeable and professional. We had an offer over our asking price only days after our property went on the market. Thank you Megan. You have made everything possible, you understood how important this move was for us!!

Robert Ellis recently helped us with the sale of our home. Within hours of calling, our for sale sign was up and our photos were booked in for 2 days...time. Within around 10 days of it going online we had had I think 6 or so viewings and our home was officially sold. The whole process was incredibly efficient and the ladies at the office and who came to our home (Megan, Lauren & Sandra) absolutely lovely and made our first time selling a home so simple and straightforward. A special shout out to Sandra & Megan who had to put up with my incessant calling towards the end of our sale going through (we were eager to get to our new home haha!). Sandra was always happy to chase solicitors more than expected to, and helped us keep everything moving. We were in our new house just 8 weeks after going on the market which is a testament to their efficiency and being up for a challenge!! A big thank you to everyone at Robert Ellis Arnold☺️

Beth, Robert Ellis, Stapleford, was amazing throughout the whole purchase process. She was friendly, helpful and reassuring and we couldn’t have as...ked for anything more. Beth helped to make the process of buying a house so much easier. The gift box when we collected the keys was a lovely thought.

From start to finish Robert Ellis have been extremely helpful! After many issues with the chain ever growing, Beth and her team were always calling to...try and break it. With what felt like forever, she managed it somehow and we got to move into our first home. It was extremely convenient to move with Robert Ellis, we were able to sort our mortgage out with the wonderful Tom. The whole process was smooth, whilst it was a long process. Beth always kept me updated with what was happening. But the best call was to say pack up its happening!
